North America Hydrogen Focus – Tuesday 8th & Wednesday 9th June 2021

Make the Right Connections to Join the Hydrogen Industry in North America

The US is currently the world’s second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases and recently rejoined the Paris climate agreement with big ambitions and in the best moment. While emissions worldwide from factories, airplanes and cars dipped sharply last year due to pandemic-related lockdowns, coming back to business as usual disregards the agreed temperature limits. The new American administration seeks an accountable, transparent pathway to reduce emissions in the prospect of having a net zero economy by 2050 and acknowledges the dramatic consequences of failing this task. Similarly, Canada’s Hydrogen Strategy is targeting the same result and positions the country as a world-leading producer, user and exporter of clean hydrogen, and associated technologies. To avoid worsening heatwaves, flooding, storms and societal unrest, the US plans investments, policies and research that will in effect not only decarbonise particular industries but the whole economy in a narrowing window of time.

Moving Forward with Innovative Strategies from the Most Important Energy Players

A decisive American policy action to reduce emissions is a significant and much-needed signal of solidarity and a great enabler of change. In the words of John Kerry, the United States Special Presidential Envoy for Climate:

“The goal is to get the job done at climate, step up and work with other countries to reach net zero by 2050 or better, or sooner.

Finding Synergies within the Rising Hydrogen Infrastructure

The scale of the decarbonisation project in America will imply the usage of hydrogen in new sectors and across multiple applications. The FCHEA’s Road Map to a US Hydrogen Economy shows how critically important hydrogen is to achieve a lower-carbon energy mix, and with the right actions now, can reinforce U.S. energy leadership and strengthen its economy by generating $140 billion per year in revenue and 700,000 jobs by 2030, and $750 billion per year in revenue and 3.4 million jobs by 2050.
