We’re delighted to welcome Cerion Nanomaterials as an Exhibitor at Hydrogen Americas 2024. We spoke with them and they gave us an overview of the company, shared their biggest achievements and what they’re looking forward to at the event. Meet with them at Stand C14
Tell us more about your company and how it has evolved into what it is today:
Cerion Nanomaterials was founded in 2007, but our history goes much farther back than that – beginning with precipitation-based manufacturing processes developed over 50 years at Eastman Kodak for the creation of materials used in film products.
Building on the work of Kodak, Cerion invested in research, development and engineering expertise to bring this competency far beyond the previous state of the art. These investments allow for nanomaterials to be built from the ground-up through highly controlled chemical reactions and process conditions. The result is precise control over the size and technical attributes of the nanomaterial, ensuring an exact fit to a customer’s material specifications – not just in the lab – but at manufacturing scale. Due to our unique and differentiated capability, today we are the largest company in the United States for custom design, scale up and manufacturing of inorganic nanomaterials and serve as a trusted supplier to companies in more than 40 industries around the globe.
What is your company’s biggest achievements and what projects are you currently working on?
The cost of developing in-house advanced expertise in nanomaterials is prohibitively expensive and time intensive, resulting in a significant barrier to entry for companies considering its adoption. We’ve developed an approach that provides companies with access to this expertise through all phases of their product lifecycle including applied research, development, scale-up, commercialization and manufacturing. This allows our clients to remain focused on what they do best – advancing the development and delivery of their product, while Cerion stays focused on providing the custom designed nanomaterials necessary to create the nanomaterials to meet their product performance requirements and get to market quickly and cost-effectively. We also understand that Intellectual Property (IP) plays an important role in how companies distinguish themselves in the marketplace and create that competitive advantage, so we’re under very strict confidentiality rules when it comes to client projects so we can’t share any information… suffice it to say – we’re working on a lot of new and innovative projects!
What makes your company stand out in the hydrogen/energy industry?
Cerion’s approach is unique because we start with the customer – their product, their process, their requirements – and work collaboratively to provide a nanomaterial solution that works for them. Whether you have proof of concept or are interested in establishing proof of concept, Cerion can help. Our solutions-based approach allows us to quickly provide you with optimized candidate materials based on your specified product application to enable you to rapidly enable a path towards commercialization. Our team acts as an extension of your development team, following your lead to ensure both fit and scalability for commercialization.

We’re delighted to welcome Headwater Solutions as an Exhibitor at Hydrogen Americas 2024. We spoke with them and they gave us an overview of the company, shared their biggest achievements and what they’re looking forward to at the event. Meet with them at Stand B30
Tell us more about your company and how it has evolved into what it is today:
The Headwaters Companies have been in business since 2016, but are a continuation of the 30 year career our managing partner, Frank Lomax, in the hydrogen industry. Frank left CB&I for family reasons after a 20 year career culminating in running their global hydrogen purification business, and collected a team of veteran hydrogen experts from his previous teams as the nucleus for Headwaters. The addition of further great industry veteran hires in key roles as well as a strong cooperative education and new engineer training program has allowed us to build a world-class engineering and manufacturing team located at our Ithaca, NY offices and manufacturing plant.
What is your company’s biggest achievements and what projects are you currently working on?
Headwaters has a reference list of 41 industrial and cleantech commercial hydrogen plants. We have a strong mix of ongoing revamp projects on existing industrial hydrogen facilities as well as new-build business, including front end engineering and execution of new projects through manufacturing and commissioning at client sites. We work with most of the oil refining companies in the United States as well as clients in the chemicals and industrial gas sectors, and cleantech developers interested in leveraging our wealth of actual experience in the hydrogen industry, our worldwide partnerships with key technology firms like BASF, Zeochem and Rockwell Automation, and vertically-integrated manufacturing capabilities.
What makes your company stand out in the hydrogen/energy industry?
Headwaters provides a unique bridging function in the hydrogen industry. We are the only independent player with legitimate, established business activity in the “real world” of hydrogen production in industrial facilities and the nascent cleantech market. Although a few major operating companies have this capability, independent developers and traditional industrial players who are not yet in the cleantech market can really benefit from our capabilities in trying to develop new projects. As the last Western Hemisphere producer of round furnace steam reformer plants, and the only vertically-integrated North American player with technology, engineering and U.S. manufacturing in the hydrogen production and purification markets, our offering is unique in the industry. Unlike historical firms that have exited the market and/or shuttered their U.S. manufacturing facilities, and unlike our German and Chinese competitors, we also vertically-integrate the crucial process gas compression technologies in our offer. We are the only player in the Western Hemisphere market who can deliver a complete hydrogen technology license, then engineer and manufacture production, purification, compression and controls system equipment needed for the project, all compliant with the U.S. content requirements of the IRA. Since we do not execute the field construction portion of the projects, or conduct “outside battery limits” engineering, our scope of supply nicely complements EPC providers in delivering a complete project successfully.
What are you most looking forward to at Hydrogen Americas 2024 Summit & Exhibition?
At Hydrogen Americas 2024 we are focused on making connections with clients who can benefit from our products and services. Most of the people engaged in the cleantech, or “green” hydrogen world have very little industry experience, and our normal networking-based marketing that is effective in the industrial marketplace has a hard time reaching these new participants. It is also nice to catch up in person with long-time colleagues from the industry, in order to help understand their views on the lay of the land in the market. We really welcome attendees to come down and see us at our booth.

We’re delighted to welcome HSB as an Exhibitor at Hydrogen Americas 2024. We spoke with them and they gave us an overview of the company, shared their biggest achievements and what they’re looking forward to at the event. Meet with them at Stand B18
Tell us more about your company and how it has evolved into what it is today:
The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company, known today as HSB, was founded in 1866 in response to the dangers raised by the transformative power of steam.
In 1865, a riverboat called the Sultana overloaded with freed Union prisoners of war sank after its steam boilers exploded killing approximately 1,800 of the 2,400 passengers aboard the vessel. Many were POW’s from Andersonville and other Confederate prison camps. This tragedy marks one of the worst maritime disasters in U.S. history. Unfortunately, it is not a very well-known event overshadowed by the assassination of President Lincoln, becoming nothing more than a footnote in the news at that time.
The event inspired members of the Hartford-based Polytechnic Club, formed shortly before the war, to reunite and found the Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company (HSB) the following year. The Club’s members included Francis A. Pratt and Amos Whitney the founders of the Pratt & Whitney, and Elisha Root, president of Colt’s Patent Firearms Manufacturing Co., as well as Jeremiah M. Allen, founder and first president of HSB. The Club was founded to seek answers to pressing technical issues. Steam boilers were of particular interest because they were core to the Industrial Revolution. They also regularly exploded at a rate of one every four days causing death, severe injury, and destruction of property.
The story of the Sultana is rooted in the very core of our company’s history and each year we humbly remember the loss of life and how it shaped our future. Our company has now evolved through three industrial revolutions: steam, electricity, and information technology and software. We were the first company in the U.S. founded on the basis of safety when that was the most pressing industrial issue of its time.
Today, HSB has grown to be a worldwide leader in the interpretation and application of boiler and pressure vessel codes, standards, directives, and customer specifications. We offer a wide range of inspection services for owners and fabricators of boilers, pressure equipment, nuclear components, and process and power plants. With more than four hundred inspectors worldwide and offices strategically located around the world, we are able to offer local representation and jurisdictional experience providing virtually every aspect of pressure equipment inspection and certification globally.
What are your company’s biggest achievements and what projects are you currently working on?
We pride ourselves on integrity and ethics and respect our client’s privacy, so we cannot speak to any specific projects we are currently working on. However, our membership with the United States Hydrogen Alliance (USHA) has helped our organization by connecting us with key players in the industry. With their finger on the pulse, the USHA has also been keeping us informed of progress, clarification, guidance, and changes to the Infrastructure Bill and the IRA.
HSB’s work with the USHA will help shape the future of the US hydrogen economy through independent Third Party Inspection, verification, and certification. With so few companies with any experience in the hydrogen industry right now, involving a company like HSB with over 150 years of experience in industrial inspection and certification can make a project bankable, profitable, and most of all safe.
Our USHA membership has been a catalyst in establishing flourishing business relationships with clients as projects move from planning to production.
What makes your company stand out in the hydrogen/energy industry?
HSB joined the USHA to become part of a bigger team in the hydrogen space. Having USHA connections in the business of hydrogen allows HSB to build our relationships with project owners, EPCs, manufacturers, lawmakers, and end users at the ground level.
The hydrogen space has the potential to transition from demonstration volume to significant user volume. Hydrogen brings new applications and designs to pressure equipment and storage equipment, all of which lead to modified performance and safety requirements. We are competitively positioned with a suite of hydrogen solutions to strategically serve growing market demands.
HSB has a global presence with local insights enabling us to support complex multi-country production while understanding the local market dynamics, customer preferences, and regulatory requirements. Our global teams are connected by innovation and technology, effectively and efficiently serving our customers’ needs with integrity. Like most companies, we are focused on growing our customer base while adapting to the changing market with a focus on renewables. Right now, we see opportunities everywhere in almost all countries around the globe. Our goal is to continue as an industry leader delivering high-value and quality service as we navigate through a challenging and ever-evolving market.
What are you most looking forward to at the Hydrogen Americas 2024 Summit & Exhibition?
We are exhibiting again this year at Booth #B18 in the Main Atrium and looking forward to making new connections and networking with some of the folks we met last year.
HSB has always provided inspections for safety and assurance of pressure vessels, which have many applications. We continue to see the need with industry leaders for the critical feedback loop of independent inspection to confirm pressure equipment is both built correctly and designed with appropriate safety factors. These types of services benefit the equipment manufacturers’ delivery of high-quality equipment and help the end user better manage delivery disruptions or unplanned start-up problems.
Our focus this year is to continue promoting HSB as an industry leader to support the emerging hydrogen market as the solution to your Third Party Inspection needs for every stage of the hydrogen life cycle process.

We’re delighted to welcome Comsol as an Exhibitor at Hydrogen Americas 2024. We spoke with them and they gave us an overview of the company, shared their biggest achievements and what they’re looking forward to at the event. Meet with them at Stand C08
Tell us more about your company and how it has evolved into what it is today:
From the very beginning, COMSOL has developed the COMSOL Multiphysics software with multiphysics as the central requirement. All of the specialized add-on modules work seamlessly through the platform product, and users can take comfort in knowing that if a new add-on module is released in a new software version, it will work with the rest as usual. This means that the user interface is consistent regardless of engineering application and physics phenomena, so once a user is accustomed to the modeling workflow, they do not need to relearn it if they want to model another device or treatment product that involves different physics phenomena than what they were first working on.
Similarly, simulation engineers across teams and departments may work on different models and at some point decide to share them with each other. Since both teams can use COMSOL Multiphysics for their application area, they can easily open and work with each other’s models if desired.
What makes your company stand out in the hydrogen/energy industry?
When direct measurement is impractical or impossible, engineers and scientists turn to modeling and simulation. The COMSOL Multiphysics® software is the platform product for creating physics-based models and simulation applications, and features a consistent user experience across engineering applications and physics phenomena.
By using COMSOL Multiphysics® for modeling hydrogen and energy production through electrolysis, gasification, solar power, steam reforming, pyrolysis, and fuel cells, designs can be created and analyzed virtually, taking into account all factors that impact performance and cost.
