During America’s leading hydrogen event #H2Americas2024 Summit & Exhibition, we spoke to global and regional #hydrogen and #energy leaders about the future outlook for the hydrogen industry, including an interview with Beth Trask, Vice President, Global Energy Transition, Environmental Defense Fund.
“I’m Beth Trask, I’m Vice President for Global Energy Transition at Environmental Defense Fund. We’re an international environmental advocacy organization, not for profit, whose mission is to stabilize the climate.
The company’s that are here today are facing a truly awesome responsibility. They have the responsibility to run successful businesses, to make a profit, but they also have a much higher responsibility which is to play a leading role in decarbonizing the global economy. Helping nations meet their climate goals under the Paris agreement, that is not easy, that is not straightforward, it takes a lot of focused effort and commitment, and that’s truly why we’re all here today, not just to grow our businesses but to grow a sustainable hydrogen economy that also meets imperative climate goals.
It’s incredibly important to bring all the stakeholders together to work on this massive joint endeavor which is decarbonizing the global economy. We need scientists at the table first and foremost because we have to get the science right, we need industry partners, industry leaders who really want to lean in and lead on getting hydrogen right, we need policy makers who are trying to find the best policy instruments to drive hydrogen where it needs to go in the cleanest most responsible way possible. It’s an all-in type of endeavor and we need all of these stakeholders around the table.
Hydrogen Americas is a terrific event because it truly does bring all the stakeholders together that we need. As an environmental NGO working on climate change, we feel like we have an important seat at the table here at this event and we’ve really been welcomed in, and there’s a lot of interest in understanding the science and how we can get hydrogen right based on that science. So it’s an honour to be here working with companies, with policy makers on finding these solutions.
There’s a real diversity of people here, from very technical people up to business leaders to leadership level executives, there’s just a real diversity here and I think that’s meeting different people with these different perspectives and skillsets is part of what makes this a meaningful event.
This is truly a pivotal moment in the development of the hydrogen economy and it’s critical that we get this moment right, policies are being set, very important policies in the U.S., Europe and around the globe that are going to determine the trajectory for hydrogen, and to determine to what extent it really helps us meet our climate goals, to what extent it is good for communities, for society in general, good for the tax payers, builds a healthy sustainable long term hydrogen economy. This is the moment for us all to come together and figure out how to get hydrogen right.”
